July 2018 | Shallow fluid flow systems at the Snøhvit field

P-Cable 3D study of pockmarks and shallow fluid flow systems at the Snøhvit field in the SW Barents Sea
Successful collaboration between UiT and VBPR

Analysis of high-resolution 3D P-Cable seismic data from the Hammerfest Basin to describe likely fluid pathways leading to pockmark formation at the seabed. Also explaining the age and timescale of pockmark development, and conceptual model illustrating pockmark formation mechanisms.

June 2018 | Seismic monitoring over deep water fields (P-Cable for Shell, GoM)

P-Cable for time-lapse seismic monitoring - P.Hatchell et al (Shell) at EAGE 2018

Shell acquired high resolution 3D and 4D streamer seismic data over three deep water fields. The resulting data show that HR3D images can be obtained at reservoirs located up to 2000 m below the seafloor in deepwater environments. An additional 2D test of the system demonstrated a time-lapse repeatability of NRMS=15% in zones where the reservoirs lay above the first water bottom multiple. This work suggests that HR3D surveys are suitable for low-cost time-lapse seismic monitoring of deepwater reservoirs and geohazards that are shallow relative to the water depth.

April 2018 | Pre-breakup geology of Jan Mayen revealed by seafloor sampling

New paper by Stéphane Polteau (VBPR) published in Tectonophysics

The Jan Mayen Microplate Complex (JMMC) in the NE Atlantic is interpreted to mostly consist of continental fragments with possible interstitial embryonic oceanic crust. A complex Cenozoic rifting history accompanied by extensive extrusive and intrusive volcanism have made the geological characterization of the JMMC challenging especially due to poor seismic imaging beneath the breakup basalt succession.
